The Knights of St. Columba was founded in Glasgow in 1919, on the initiative of Patrick J. O’Callaghan, and by the early 1920s there were Councils south of the border too. It is an Order of Catholic laymen dedicated to the service of the Church and fellow man.

It is non-political and essentially democratic and exists to support the mission of the Catholic Church. The Order works for the spiritual and material good of its members and their families, assists Catholic youth, and believes in social participation through action programmes. The many areas of action in which the Knights are involved include: hospitals, hospices, respite homes, and refuges for the homeless; Justice and Peace and Right to Life groups; raising awareness of substance abuse; providing Christmas cribs and Christmas, Easter and Pentecost posters.

The Knights of St. Columba is not a secret society; there are no passwords, handshakes, etc. The Order is completely open and potential members may attend meetings. Admission ceremonies often take place in church during Mass.

Knights have an obligation to assist the clergy of their parish in their duties, whenever that assistance is required.
